Blogging Goals + Giveaway (Part 2!)

goals

First and foremost, what’s the verdict on the first day of the year? Erstwhile, I had friends who used to share all imparting knowledge, and according to them, legend has it that the first day of each year is an omen that will dictate how the rest of your year will go. I, however, prefer not to give credence to superstition, because most of the time, my January firsts are mundane and platitudinous, and false belief will only serve to nurse my unfounded fears. To be fair, it doesn’t suck bigtime, but most of the time its stodgy and monotonous, and I prefer each year a roller coaster ride of activity. And besides, you pave yourself the path towards either progress or retrogress, and though it’s never really as all-around kick-ass as what it looks like in your head, most of the time it’s just as eventful, and there loads of opportunities to have fun.

But of course, we have to keep ourselves driven to striving for excellence as bloggers. As for me, specific objectives and ground zeroes are required to keep me adrift, inspired to do better and to achieve each intent. That being said, I’ll share some of them with you, and if you have your own, don’t hesitate to tell me about them, too!

design

  1. I will read at least 100 books. I was able to do so this year (an exact hundred WOOHOO!) and though to many that may prove a negligible count, to me it means mucho. This time around, however, a hundred is the minimum– and if I keep on reading indefatigably (and saving up, because wallets don’t auto-fill, haha), I doubt that this will prove much out of reach.
  2. I will expand my review archive to at least 100 books. I haven’t been reviewing as much as I want to, due to my responsibilities to school and the steady influx of ideas for discussions, but this year, I intend to strike a balance and give myself a chance to review as much as I should be, though I can’t throw light upon the fact that my vocabulary increases threefold when I do so (do you even notice?) Because although Flip That Page is not solely a review blog, it is one first and foremost, and I want to make sure that I’m not completely defeating the purpose.
  3. I will host more giveaways. I’m hosting two right now, and honestly, it’s ingratiating. There is much to be thankful for, because I would be nowhere, and nothing without my viewers and my followers, so sharing a part of me with them (with you, ALAV YOU!) and reaching out in tangible ways would make me helluva happy, and hopefully have the same effect on the people in my immediate surroundings, albeit across the World Wide Web.
  4. I will open up to the Contemporary and New Adult genres. I’ve always seen myself as a loyalist to the Young Adult genre, but I do wish to open myself up to other genres that may apply to my age and to my preferences. Surprisingly enough, I’ve read more Contemporary YA than Fantasy Fiction this 2013, and though I haven’t completely snuggled up to the genre so much as put it to the test, I am more than willing to read up on more as it has passed with flying colors. And though New Adult may be too mature in theme to leave me entirely complacent, I of course don’t want to miss out on the good stuff, so it would be nice to open up for a change.
  5. I will complete the NaNoWriMo challenge. I’ve never written past 25 000, and honestly, it’s a little frustrating (okay maybe that wasn’t very honest, because it’s incredibly frustrating). I have plenty of time to prepare for the next installment of NaNoWriMo, so if I lay the groundwork early on, I hope to finish in time.
  6. I will meet more bloggers. I’m not too coy and skittish a person in reality, so I guess that’s part of the reason why it sucks that I haven’t been able to mingle fellow bloggers near enough. Gayle Forman will visit on the 18th, however, and if I successfully brainwash coax my parents into letting me go, maybe I can work on this goal by then.
  7. I will organize my bookshelf. My shelves are just about as grubby as my room, which is a landmine in its chaos. I don’t have a lot of books though, so it should be a lot easier for me to put things in order.
  8. I will follow all the series I’ve started. Unless they’re utterly pestiferous, of course. I hate abandoning series because I hate knowing how something begins and not knowing it ends, so I’ve resolved to studiously follow the series I’ve started and hope that everything else doesn’t fall into maelstrom.
  9. I will discover the works of at least 50 new authors. I don’t know that many of them, and honestly I really want to. There are lots of authors out there who deserve esteem and accolade, so maybe now is the right time to open up to their works and (hopefully) deem any number of them worthy of auto-approval.
  10. I will keep the blog running until the end of 2014. Easier said than done.

But like I said, effective management comes with organization: scheduling posts, planning discussions ahead, making enough time for the blog to be able to update it regularly. Keeping notebooks, planners and even apps like Evernote are handy, though it depends on the medium preferred. As for me, I prefer to store one and all on Microsoft OneNote, though I am trying physical media on for size, because ideas seem to flow at my discretion better as written on paper than as typed onscreen. I like to write on gorgeous notebooks for this purpose, this year for instance, on the Landmark Notebooks from Team Manila (a recent, and amazing discovery), and albeit a little pricier than the standard notebook its size, the general feel and the design is more than enough to make it well worth the cost. Plus, it’s Filipino-made, which makes me proud, so if you have yet to pay their shop a visit, I encourage you to do so 😀

The thing is, however, that I have reached many a goal previously set, and once again, none of it would have been possible without the support and inspiration from the lovely viewers and fellow bloggers who take the time to stop by and have a nice chat. So it’s time for another giveaway, you guys!

  1. I’m a by-the-seat-of my-pants reader. I just pick whatever sounds good at that moment. And right now, it’s One Summer: America, 1927 by Bill Bryson. The title kind of says it all. It’s about major events that occurred in American during the summer of 1927– Charles Lindburgh’s flight across the Atlantic, Babe Ruth’s home run record– that sort of thing.

    • Nooo that’s not pathetic! But I WILL incessantly recommend that series to you! You will come to LOVE it, I know 🙂 I hope you get to read it soon, then! And thanks for stopping by Remy ❤

  2. Sounds like great blogging goals to me! Especially meeting more bloggers 🙂 It’s one of my personal goals to get less shy and I’m starting to get better at it every year 😀 I’m not participating in the giveaway, but they do look very cute!

    • Well I definitely wish to meet a lot of bloggers, but not just the ones in my country 😀 I know you can reach that goal Mel, you’ve been very active on the blog, and an amazing blogger too, which makes me uber happy ❤

  3. I love your goals! I think they’re all very realistic and doable. I’m personally a very big fan of contemporary YA, so if you ever want recommendations, feel free to ask! I hope this year is a great one for you 🙂

  4. Those are all such great goals and the way you state it just makes you sound so cofident. I hope to read 60 books this year and finish the series I started. I did quite a series last year and I’m okay with that. The series wasn’t worth continuing.

    • Haha well I AM confident that I’m gonna be able to fulfill at least SOME of these, but I sure am hoping that confidence won’t slip into oblivion! But yeah, if the series isn’t worth it, then don’t. That’s my policy too 😀

  5. Good luck with your goals, Jasmine!! And I’m sure you’ll be able to achieve them 😉 And discovering novels by 50 NEW authors! WOW! That sounds like fun to me 😉 The Snape-Dumbledore GIF was great 😉
I love the new background by the way!! It’s so pretty :3 Thanks for sharing Jasmine!! <33

    • Thank you so much Emily! I sure do hope so 😀 And yeah, there’s a Debut Author Challenge for me to fulfill, so we’ll see how that goes 🙂 I actually have 10 debut books now, so that’s 1/5 done if I finish reading. WOOHOO for that 😀 Yeahp, anything Pottery is for me! And I’m glad you like the background ❤ You're very welcome as well!

  6. I’m determined to venture out of my comfort zone and try new genres such as horror and contemporary — my most read genre last year was still fantasy. What can I say, I’m a fantasy freak haha 😉 Although if I may add, I will mostly only read the light and fun kinds. I just came to a realization that heavy contemporary isn’t exactly my thing 😦 It’s too sad and depressing I guess. And hopefully you can do all those resolutions — I’m sure you do girl ❤ Especially #10 because I love your posts so much ahahaha * ^ *

    • Well that’s a good thing, because horror and contemporary definitely have lots of good novels to offer 😀 Yeahh, I’m ready to embrace my inner fantasy freak too XD I like lighter contemporary SO much better than the heavy sorts too, because I like to read books that make me happy, and the more serious ones just depress me D: And I hope I can do all these too! Thank you so much Kezia ❤

  7. ‘you pave yourself the path towards either progress or retrogress’ – SO TRUE! 😀

100 is a very realistic number, Jasmine, and I hope you read that many and more this year! And the expanding the review archive? I totally get that, girl. I reviewed about 50 books last year, I think, but I want to work on doing more this year, and expand into other book blogging areas as well.

Keep the blog running till the end of the year… lol it is easier said than done, I know 😀

Thanks for the giveaway, Jasmine! I love new notebooks, and these look SO PRETTY! ❤

    • Right? XD Well, I’m glad you agree! Yeah, I got to exactly a hundred, and some people can even reach 300-400 which is just AMAZING, and I wanna be able to give myself a solid goal to aim towards 🙂 Woohoo so let’s work on our review archives together! I know we can make it work 😀 Yeah, I sure hope I won’t be giving up and all before 2015, but I definitely know as much as you do that it’s gonna be a bumpy ride XD And you’re very welcome, Fahima! I’m glad you like these notebooks, they ARE very pretty looking ❤

  8. I am totally going to read 100 books too! I would like to meet more bloggers myself.. but the Colorado group is hard to find and get together. We tried it once and I thought it was awful. Oh well. I don’t plan anything on my blog… is just a crazy time!! I love it!

    • WOOHOO 100 is something to aim for, isn’t it? 😀 Yeah it’s hard to do blogger meetups that actually happen! XD but hopefully one day we can make it work 🙂 I guess it’s okay to take the spontaneous approach with blogging too! Crazy time sounds like fun 😀

  9. Best of luck for all your goals in 2014! I have to agree with you about ignoring the January 1 = an omen for the rest of the year thing. That sounds way too scary but also inaccurate! I love that you used that dancing gif of SPROCKETS from SNL, lol. I used to love that sketch! Those notebooks are really cute! You’re sweet for doing a giveaway. 🙂 Happy New Year!

    • Thank you Kelley! And yes, I think my friends just wanted to scare me somehow, but it never really worked! And it is SUPER inaccurate XD And YES I love SPROCKETS! I miss that so much D: And aww well thanks again Kelley, I’m glad you like these notebooks 🙂 Happy New Year to you too!

  10. Loving #10-I can totally relate to that! Running a blog is harder than one might think so I think we, bloggers deserve a toast for surviving a year without quitting right? 😉

I LOVE giveaways too-both hosting them and entering them! I did a lot of those last year and I hope to continue that this year too.

I use Microsoft OneNote too-Being organized is so much easier now, isn’t it?

THOSE GIFS!!! Good Luck with your goals for 2014, Jasmine and thanks for lovely giveaways(those notebooks are SO cute)! 😀

Nuzaifa @ Say It with Books

    • Oh yes, we do deserve some big-ass toast for getting through the year XD And I’m glad you love giveaways Nuz! I’ve never really been into them up until now, but I hope to host and enter more this year 😀 Yup, OneNote has pretty much saved my blogging life. Thank you Asti XD Haha well Dancing GIFs make people happy! And you’re welcome Nuz, glad you like these notebooks, and thanks as well for participating 🙂

    • Awww THANK YOU for the support Charlotte ❤ I'm pretty excited for NaNoWriMo 🙂 And I'll cheer you on too, of course, if you're also participating! I hope I can complete these goals too, and I hope just as much you can accomplish yours!

  11. For that thing about meeting new bloggers, I suggest using twitter often. Trust me, you will get addicted. I don’t think I would’ve ever gotten to where I am now without twitter because it is so helpful!

As well, reading 100 book isn’t that hard once you’re “into” it. You can do it! *wave pom-poms*

    *hugs*

I love your goals for 2014 and I equally hope that you’ll be able to achieve them!!!!

    • Oh, well thank you very much for that suggestion Nova! I love Twitter so much as well XD And thank you for the support (and the pom-poms!) *huggles* I hope I can achieve these too, and that you can achieve whatever YOUR goals are, just the same 🙂

  12. How do you do it, Jasmine? I love how organised you are! :O
GO MEET GAYLE FORMAN! Even though I haven’t read her books, I’m excited for you to meet her! 😀
I want to complete the NaNoWriMo challenge as well! Last year didn’t go so well but I’m hoping I’ll complete it this year! We could be NaNo buddies! 😀
50 authors? That is a lot! But I’ll cheer you to the end of that race! *waves pom-poms*
I plan to read loads of Contemporary books, especially Anna and the French Kiss. I’ve heard lots of praise for it!

  13. I want to try the NaNoWriMo challenge this year, I’ve heard it’s SUPER hard, but I still want to give it a try. I would like to read The Percy Jackson Series, the rest of the TMI series, The Infernal Devices series, the Legend series… a lot of well series haha. I want to read more paranormal romances… as it’s my favorite genre and branch out and try autobiographies and memoirs!

  14. I’m planning to read Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (actually started on this. I definitely recommend this if you’re into fantasy reads :D), Reboot by Amy Tintera, Proxy by Alex London, The Mara Dyer trilogy… OMG i have so much to mention! LOL Oh yes, and of course the Divergent trilogy 😀

    • Yep, thank you for the recommendation– people have been telling me quiet a lot to read it too XD Oh I love Mara Dyer, but then again you knew that 😀 I love Divergent, though not so much the ending. Anyway, thank you for sharing that with me 🙂
