Blogging Resolutions + Year End Giveaway

First and foremost, IT’S 2014 YOU GUYS!! (at least for me, depends on the timezone). I can’t even believe that this is the year I get to graduate from endless partying academic hell high school, and pick out courses, and go to college and grow freaking up and SQUEEEEEE 2014!!

… Okay, I needed that. Happy New Year to y’all! Anyway, I just decided to assemble a list of Blogging Resolutions for the New Year, the New Me, and of course the New Flip That Page and share it with you ( it’s not going to change inordinately though, I just wanted to embellish that statement. HA!) If you have some of your own, do tell 🙂

  1. I will update the blog regularly. I had to go on hiatus for almost a month just recently, because I couldn’t manage my time competently enough to metaphorically stockpile more for responsibilities to Flip That Page. And though it indubitably regained me the drive to blog, I do think it would be nice to leave a post at least 4 times each week, to keep the blog active and my viewers happy.
  2. I will leave meaningful comments on other blogs. Inasmuch as I detest conversing with walls, I would fall in utter enmity to actually being the wall.  As I’ve been doing this pretty much the entire time, I do resolve to leave comments on the blogs I follow, and the blogs of those who take the time to stop by and say hi.
  3. I will not get involved in drama with authors and fellow bloggers alike. I don’t need a reason to scorn the blogging community, and I assuredly don’t want one. Being the all-around ray of sunshine that I am, however (at least I hope that’s the ilk of aura of I radiate, because who even wants to be around a debbie-downer), I highly doubt that this will be much of a problem (#ego).
  4. I will be diligent with author review requests. I will push accepted requests as far up the list as is possible. Lately I’ve been feeling iniquitous, on account of my ignorance, but I do resolve to do my part, and this time be persistent in filtering out requests that may be well worth my time, and assiduous in reading sent copies. In exchange for their free provision of the title, it would be nice to give back to these authors with an honest and prompt review.
  5. I will post original content. I will not succumb to posting memes and tours particularly (though I am envisaging my first tour), and instead focus on generating creative vomit and original content that will provoke thought, encourage discussion, and solve predicaments. If I haven’t been trenchant or convincing enough for your fancies, do forgive me, but I promise to amp up my game for the coming year.
  6. I will not envy others their success. I will not try to bring others down to bring myself up. Nobody has to be that despicable to gain followers, and anyone who is doesn’t even deserve the attention! Let’s all be friends here, aight? Let’s maximize the use of the word ‘congratulations’ and the phrase ‘I’m happy for you’ sincerely and wholeheartedly, because you know what? Being content is the only answer to being happy.
  7. I will not obsess over statistics. Followers and retweets are important to bloggers, yes, but they will come in due time, so I needn’t monitor them consistently. Gratitude and improvement is the only way to go, and Augustus Waters did once say, “I’m on a roller coaster that only goes up, my friend.” (Though I must say that sort of ride will scare the bejeezus outta me).
  8. I will think of blogging as a hobby, not an obligation. This is paramount for circumventing slumps, because if I want to keep up my blog, it’s important to work at my own pace and not give in to the outside pressure.
  9. I will queue posts and manage my blog responsibly. I’ve been mentally castigating myself for lacking the initiative, but I do hope this year greets me an active vibe! I think I’m going to need an extra post or two, lickety-split.
  10. I will fulfill the aforementioned. Easier said then done.

The thing is though, I’ve never been able to keep a project up for more than half a year, save for my planner. Flip That Page, however, has been live for a little over seven months now— and if I do the math–let’s assume correctly–that means I’ve already broken my start-and-not-finish record! (because I sure do hope to start-and-never-finish blogging).

My point is, however, that none of this *makes all-encompassing gesture* would have acceded to realization if not for the amazing readers who have been supportive of Flip That Page from day one onwards, and because the New Year is cause enough for celebration, I think now is the time to give back and show you guys just how much I appreciate the people who have inspired me to keep on keeping on, and have kept me company for the duration of my stay (which I hope lasts for much, much longer!)

So, I’ve decided to host, not one, but TWO giveaways (so stay tuned for the next one tomorrow!) to spread the love to all the marvelous readers out there. I will be giving away your choice of book from my top 10 reads this year (you may also choose any other book in the series, if applicable), plus my very first 2014 read, Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood. Options include:

Also, a shout-out to my parents: to mommy, for supporting every endeavor, keeping your calm in the midst of vexation, and for being downright awesomesauce for sponsoring this giveaway (so thank her, not me); and daddy, despite being a total non-reader, for encouraging my love for books and deriving happiness from mine . So THANK YOU mom and dad, infinite huggles to both of you!! (I’ll give you real ones later on, you’re right across the hall, haha).

So whether or not it’s your first time on the blog, do participate in this mission to spread the happiness! It is open INTERNATIONALLY, and will end JANUARY 30, 2014. So without further ado…

Some Of The Best 2014 Planners

Here’s a question: do you guys keep planners? I know I do, and I enjoy keeping myself organized and my life carefully catalogued, by mapping out my activities onto their pages (and sometimes I wish I could project that obsessive compulsion onto my pigsty of a room, haha!) And though it may sound like a hassle (because why would you hanker on to live life in non-spontaneity?) believe me when I say, its actually oodles of fun.

So if you guys are thinking of getting yourselves planners for the next year (and if you already have, tell me about it!) then maybe you’ll find the perfect match with these finds! I’m not sure if some of these are available outside of the Philippines, but I do buy mine from either Fullybooked or an online shop, so they should be around somewhere 😀

IHeart Organizing 2014 Daily Planner

For Optimum Organization. This is a printable planner by Jennifer Jones, and as always it’s a helluva lot of pretty, and I HEART it. The Daily Planner features an amusing cover page, and each subsequent turn is designed to help you map out your life in days, weeks, and months, and help you keep track of all the important dates and events you need to remember. In addition, you can choose to add a meal planning option, prerequisites for the foodies and food bums (like me!) out there. You may avail of the printables to this planner at Jen’s Etsy Shop (it’s currently unavailable printed and packaged, and comes only in digital PDF files, which may sound like an inconvenience, but is tip-top and up to snuff if you want to filter out the unnecessary pages).

Features Include:

  •         Colorful intro page
  •         Pre- filled dates with optional meal planning
  •         Two-page monthly calendar
  •         Two-page daily spread
  •         15 options for personalized cover sheet
  •         Extra printables for special dates and contacts
  •         Pages for notes

Erin Condren 2014 Life Planner

For The Posh And Sophisticated. Erin Condren has, and will always be an organization inspiration to me, and his/her planners are much the same (and even then, I honestly don’t know what his/her gender is, haha!) But the thing is, Erin’s works are in all likelihood, the most elaborate and all-inclusive planners out there, which is ear candy to the copious and finicky. It features a wide range of extras for planning, in addition to the basic daily, weekly, and monthly spreads, plus a fully customizable cover (you can even use your own photo and have your name printed in colorful font. How cool is that?) And the verdict? If your wallet can take it, this is well worth the expense.

Features Include:

  •         Laminated cover and monthly tabs
  •         Inspirational quotes
  •         Perpetual calendar
  •         Monthly and weekly spreads
  •         Snap-in page holder with a ruler double function
  •         Pages for meal / exercise / list plans
  •         Lined and blank notes pages
  •         Contacts pages
  •         240 colorful stickers for important events
  •         Plastic pouch with gift labels

Le Petit Prince Moleskine 2014 Planner

For The Little Bookish. I love Moleskins! Being the exceedingly practicable person that I am however, I don’t happen to revel in a purchase every so often. From time to time, it’s too operose to resist, especially if it’s a planner as perky and attractive as this ode to a beloved classic. If you’re into simple, no-nonsense planners with pocket-sized options, then this one is a worthwhile choice.

Features Include:

  •         Silkscreen Antwerp blue cover with reproduced pages from The Little Prince
  •         Themed flyleaves
  •         Bookmark ribbon and elastic closure
  •         Themed inserts
  •         Address book
  •         2 The Little Prince cardboard bookmarks

FILED: 2014 Doodle Planner

For The Artistic Fun Lover. The Doodle Planner is, by all means, my favorite in this selection, and is what I’m using for the next year (which is exciting!!) I’m big on nursing artistic whim and maximizing personalization, so doodling and scribbling on planners is something of an urge I can’t supress. Apart from the fact that you can design and color in entire pages (which is pure bliss if you own a set of 0.3 mm point Stabilo pens. Am I weird yet?) This planner also consists of quirky pages for keeping track of places to go, movies to watch, restaurants to try, and books to read, and even comes with a page-muncher bookmark (also customizable—NOICE) It’s a Pinoy-made Planner though, so I’m not sure that it’s available outside the country, but you can always check Fullybooked otherwise—they’re likely to have something similar.

Features Include:

  •         Cover in either black or white
  •         Laminate cover and smythe sewn binding
  •         Pen bandolier (pens not included)
  •         Page muncher template
  •         Monthly artworks to fill in
  •         Perpetual calendar and daily / monthly spreads
  •         Monthly expense tracker
  •         Notes and 2014 Life Plan pages
  •         Moodi plushie (for purchases from the Online Store)

The Official Book Blogger Planner 2014

For The Dedicated Blogger. This one was Octavia at Read. Sleep. Repeat’s top secret project for a time, which, taking into account her busy blogging life, is an ultimately impressive feat. If you’re into planning your life based on your blog activities, this handy planner is definitely the one, specifically designed to cater to book bloggers, and speaking for the general book blogging populace, I think that’s totally the bomb diggity. If you want it to know what it looks like though, check Octavia’s blog post yourself (and #shamelessplug: ORDER NOW!)

Features Include

  •         Weekly calendars with post types and check boxes
  •         Calendars with ARC sections
  •         Review notes with star ratings
  •         Giveaway pages
  •         ‘Random thoughts’ section
  •         Tour and blitz tracker
  •         Blog spending space
  •         ARC tracker

designAnd that’s it for this post, and I sure do hope it helped you out in some way! But now, as always, it’s your turn: do you use planners? If you are, which one are / will you be using? Tell me in the comments below!

Quiz: Celebs And Movie Adaptations

Many of you are cognizant to the fact that I’m  a quiz-loving person– and because recently, I’ve been on a hard-drive based movie marathon, I resolved to design an analogous quiz on how well you know your book-to-movie-adaptations. I’ve always been the type to superimpose onto character faces those of the actors and actresses who bring them to life, so I decided to establish each item in terms of celebrities. The rules for this quiz is simple, and is as follows:

  1.  Each item is subsisted by a set of names, in threes, each of which belonging to a distinct celebrity who starred as fictional character in one of hundreds of movie adaptations based on books.
  2. He or she may have been a protagonist, an antagonist, or a supporting character with a critical role, no less than stellar. Your job is to provide the title of the related movie, and the names of the characters these actors starred as, full or otherwise.
  3. Encode your answers by typing them in the comments section below. Do NOT cheat by sneaking a peek at previous comments’ answers or by Googling them for that matter (you may flip through your books though– honesty system!)
  4. Each movie title and character name is equivalent to one point. I will confirm your scores with a reply to your comment, so do check back if you want to know what it is! A maximum of 60 points may be earned (you need 36 to pass!)

HINTS: All of the movies listed have been released, and may not necessarily have been based from a Young Adult novel. I will also provide a set of pictures after each number, in case you recognize the face and not the name.

So without further ado, here goes!

P.S. None of the pictures are mine, and all were taken from Google Images.

1. Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes

2. Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, Logan Lerman

3. Robert Sheehan, Godfrey Gao, Lena Headey

4. Jake Abel, Diane Kruger, Max Irons

5. Douglas Smith, Leven Rambin, Brandon T. Jackson

6. Johnny Depp, Freddie Highmore, AnnaSophia Robb

7. Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone

8. Asa Butterfield, Ben Kingsley, Abigal Breslin

9. Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell

10. Willow Shields, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone

11. Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, Jay Baruchel

12. Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, Dave Franco

13. Anne Hathaway, Chris Pine, Julie Andrews

14. Matthew MacFayden, Rosamund Pike, Rupert Friend

15. Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage

And that’s it for this quiz! So take a good long look at each picture, and comment your answers below! I hope you have fun answering, and if not, I at least hope to have provided you with enough eye candy 😉 Till next time!
